How to choose the best free font for a logo
A practical method for choosing a distinctive, usable and correctly licensed logo font.
Choose by brand voice, legibility, character coverage, distinctiveness and licence—not by appearance alone. Test the real brand name before committing.
Start with the job
A logo must work at small sizes, in one colour, on screens and in print. Write down the brand qualities and practical constraints before browsing. A fashionable typeface can still fail if its key letters are weak or its spacing breaks in the actual name.
Test the complete identity
Try the business name, initials, tagline, locations and common product words. Inspect accents and punctuation. Compare several weights and avoid choosing from a generic specimen that hides the letter combinations the logo needs.
- Small-size clarity
- Black-and-white reproduction
- Distinctive key letters
- Language coverage
- Commercial and logo permission
Build a defensible choice
Keep the verified source and licence. Check whether modifications and trademark use are allowed. A strong logo decision combines a suitable design with a record showing where the font came from and what the licence permitted.
This guide explains general font practice and the permissions displayed by Font Trust. The complete licence attached to a specific font remains the controlling text.
